Mid-term submission
For my cover page, I wanted a picture that represented a person on a journey. It did not matter what kind of journey, because we are all on different journeys. This encompasses the whole magazine because its about taking that first step toward your journey in whatever you may glean from the articles within the magazine, whether it be mental or physical health. I chose a light elegant font for the cover page, not because it appeals to women, but because it is representative of living a lighter life without all the burdens of old choices and past lifestyles that did not serve a person. There is also an elegance that comes from haveing a "lighter load". I wanted the font of my table of contents page to match the cover page. To tag along with the table of contents, I placed a picture of a beautiful salad with a bow to show that food is a gift and that this salad is representative of someone who lives lighter. A salad is a cliche food on diets, but I wanted to break the mainstream stigma about salads and put one with a bow around it to show its more than a food one must eat to lose weight, but rather a food one wants to eat because of their own step towards a healthy lifestyle mentally and physically.
I stuck with a more sophisticated font for both the table of contents and the article because it is partially a scientific journal along with a health and wellness journal. This font appeals to those in the science world because its neat and precise in its shape and shows important information is being presented. The layout for both the cover page and table of contents were inspired by the magazines I researched. The table of contents was modeled after a special edition of People magazine with the landscape layout and the contents toward the left. I simplified my version and kept my picture to one side rather than puting on the whole page.
The article topic was inspired by my passion for food addiction and eating disorders. I have been following Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson on her vlogs and have participated in some of the programs she offers. I felt she would be a tough, but perfect interview for this topic. The other two experts I reached out to after having been at a conference they spoke at recently. All three replied back to me with a yes on the interview and that started the ball rolling for this article. I titled it "Interview from the experts" because I felt that would catch the attention of the reader. The reader does not know what the experts will address so they have to read further to find out. It was hard condensing the interviews into two pages, but I made sure I had the most important highlights from them. I started out my first page with a picture of someone eating lots of junk food. This was to give the reader a visual on food addiction before I explain what it means. My second picture is of a person on the floor in the bathroon with a scale next to her. She is obviously distraught. This accompanies the Psychological aspect of food addiction which the reader will understand by the time they reach the second picture. My third paragraph talks about the spiritual aspect of food addiction and how it ties into recovering from food addiction. My third picture is of a woman who is lifting up her hands in surrender to the journey or the higher power she believes in. My fourth picture is of that plate of food I used earlier in the magazine. It is a symbol of a new beginning. The recovery process that the experts talk about is represented by that salad. The salad has a lot of things in it that make it up, just like we all have past experience that have made who we are; therfore, this salad is something my readers could indentify with and feel is the mascot to their recovery journey from now on. I hope that this article and magazine is able to point those with questions in the right direction. I was not able to give the readers all I wanted to say, but this is maybe a diving board of information that they can jump off to reach the pool of support and recovery they need.
