Magazine Genre Research- Scientific American (The Gut-Brain Connection)
The Scientific American's issue of gut and brain connection had an animation of a transparent body and accentuates the brain and intestines. The Scientific American label is on the top of the page with the words Scientific American in smaller font than the word MIND to accentuate the topic of the issue. They use a deep, dark blue as the background with the animated body as a highlighted blue and the brain and gut are orange. The title is centered in the middle of the page towards the bottom with big font. Bellow the title is a brief preview of what the story discusses. The types of articles included are about weight loss, love, parenting, mental illness, and social interaction. The advertisements seen in the Scientific American are, not surprisingly, about supplements or devises that monitor health and improve aging. This makes sense because they are appealing to an audience who is generally focused on improving health and the aging process. The cover, table of contents, and articles all have pictures or animations of brains or faces of people. They will sometimes include food animations or photos into their issues to discuss our brains and the food we eat. The Scientific American caters to 3.5 million subscribers in their print and tablet media, globally. Online, they cater to 5.5 million visitors every month. The Scientific American won the National Magazine Award for their general excellence and they were also awarded the Population Institutes Global Media Award for their excellent reporting of population in the specific category of periodical. This magazine is the perfect example of successful marketing, journalism, and global reach.
