CCR Question #3 Draft
I learned about taking photos. I had to learn costuming, lighting, and expressions. All of these factors are very important in portraying a feeling and respecting photo etiquette. Being that I have no experience with photography, I learned a myriad of methods for a perfect photo. I was very ignorant when I completed my first photo shoot. I did not schedule with anyone and it was very unorganized. I did not focus on lighting or expression. This first step, though a colossal failure, was essential for me to grow in my knowledge of shooting for a magazine. My second photo shoot was very organized and intentional. I scheduled it for an afternoon when the sun would be setting, in order for the outside photo lighting to be ideal. I instructed my subjects, of which there were two for variety, on their wardrobe and their expressions for the photos. I was able to recreate some of the photos with more intention. I did not understand what photography for a magazine entailed, but this is one of the aspects I truly was able to develop.
I had to write for the audience I was reaching. Often, when writing my article, I would have to keep in mind that I have an audience to reach. My article is very science heavy and; therefore, I had to make the concepts very simple for the reader to be able to understand the content. I had to learn the difference between essay writing and article writing. When I started, I was so used to simply writing with the most eloquent words for different AICE classes, but I had to learn how to keep the intelligent voice, while also being informative.
I had to learn the conventions of making a magazine. I had no experience with producing a magazine when I entered the class. As I researched and discovered magazine convention and etiquette, my production skills for the magazine improved immensely. At first, creating a magazine cover, content page, and two-page article seemed simple, but as time went on I was enlightened on how much work truly is put into the production of a magazine. I was able to glean successful methods of marketing, distributing, and creating from the many magazines in my genre. As I discovered aspects of the magazines I appreciated, I would try to emulate them in my cover, with an authentic twist. I also had to understand how important a social media presence is for the promotion of a product. I was able to create my own social media presence for this very reason. Being that I have never promoted a product on social media, it was a skill I had to learn.
I learned to have a critical editing eye. It is nowhere near professional, but with the little experience I have had, I was able to truly criticize my product for its betterment. I thrived on the details and wanted to make my magazine as professional as possible. My eye for editing, education on magazine convention, my ear for the audience, photography skills, and my social media presence are all the production skills I developed over the course of creating my magazine.
